Facilitated Classification Process for Para SUKMA Sarawak 2024 Athletes

KUCHING, 15 July: The Sarawak 2024 Para Sports Malaysia (SUKMA) athlete management body throughout the state has been urged to complete the Para SUKMA athlete classification process to make it easier for their athletes to compete in the Para SUKMA which will take place in September 2024.

Sarawak's Women, Children and Community Welfare (KPWK) Minister of Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that the complete classification process is important to avoid the athletes who will compete face difficulties and obstacles during the day of the tournament.

"If during the classification process, athletes who are on the long or early list are categorized as having low vision, but after the classification process, they are found to have better vision than their original category (low vision), these athletes are not eligible to participate in sports under that category.

"Therefore, the states involved still have the opportunity to carry out the process of exchanging athletes because the administrative process is still under the supervision of their respective states," he said at the press conference of the 21st Edition of Sarawak's 21st Edition of the Coordination Meeting of the Main Councils of Malaysian Sports (SUKMA) 2024 in Kuching on Monday.

Fatimah added, the state management body for Para SUKMA athletes needs to send a long list of their respective state athletes to the host parent body by 31 July 2024 at the latest.

He explained that the number of athletes who will compete for each sporting event organized at the Para SUKMA Sarawak 2024 will only be determined after the shortlist is obtained and confirmed after the athlete classification process is finalised. -TVS
